Why is water a risk to hemodialysis patients you might ask. Water is key to life as we know it but it can introduce dangers in the dialysis process. If dialysate used in the dialysis process was used with simple tap water, this would introduce several substances common in tap water that can be toxic if present in dialysate.
The blood is separated from dialysate by only a thin semi-permeable membrane in dialysis. There is no liver circulation and no kidney function for most patients undergoing dialysis so any contaminants introduced during the process can present an elevated risk. Yes this water is safe to drink because certain contaminates are harmless to us in drinking water, but can be highly toxic when present in dialysate. These contaminates are: aluminum, chloride, and Fluoride. The water can be pre-treated to remove contaminates so the water purity is safe for the patient.
Mesa Labs has been a part of the dialysis community for over 25 years. We continue to manufacture two styles of Dialysate Meters: those designed for use by dialysis machine manufacturers and biomedical technicians and those used primarily by dialysis nurses or patient care technicians. Mesa also manufactures NIST-traceable standard solutions. Mesa is devoted to providing quality instruments for the dialysis industry and will continue to do so for years to come.
