In preparation for the Holiday season, we would like to share four simple steps from everydayhealth.com to keep you and your kidneys healthy:
- Eat Fruits and Vegetables
While the cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie sound delicious, be sure to watch your portions and include fruits and vegetables on your plate this Holiday. Including these in your diet can help protect your kidneys from injury and help your kidneys remove excess acid from your body.
- Take Fish Oil
If you, a family member or friend are new to Dialysis, omega-3 fatty acids like those in fish oil may help protect against sudden cardiac arrest. Amidst all the hustle and bustle of the Holiday, it is easy to forget something so small, but remembering this one simple step can help keep you healthy.
- Cut Back on Salt, Protein and Water
Consuming too much salt, protein or water at any time can plug up your body’s filtration system. To keep it running at a healthy pace, remember to pass on the salt for your Holiday meal and pay close attention to portions of proteins or other salty foods. Watch your water intake as well to make sure you are getting enough, but not too much.
Maintaining a regular amount of exercise helps regulate blood pressure and heart rates. Especially over the Holiday, it can be difficult to find time to fit in exercise, but taking the time before or after you are with family and friends will help keep your body healthy.
